Danny Garvey's life is turned around during the hard Depression. Things get worse and worse as his mother becomes frightfully ill, his father leaves home to find work, and food and money become more and more scarce every day. Taking up any odd jobs available, the young teenager does everything he can to support his mother and baby sister. However, him and his friends still find ways to have fun during these hard times. Tragic news hits him hard, but Danny finds a way to keep going.

I learned a lot about the Great Depression by reading this book, and especially about what it was like for a kid living in those times. I recommend this book to anyone who needs something to read.

Age Recommendation: 11+

Violence: There are some fights between some of the boys. There is one part when Danny is pushed against concrete by some other boys. He bleeds, obviously, and he gets some bad cuts, but other than that, and maybe some punching, there's nothing else I can remember.

Language: The word d**n is used several times.
